Our paper "Starshields for iOS: Navigating the Security Cosmos in Satellite Communication" has been published and presented at NDSS symposium 2025 by our researcher Alexander Heinrich.
The paper details the security and privacy measures implemented in the iPhone's satellite communication features. By using extensive reverse engineering we discovered how satellite communication is authenticated and encrypted, building a strong protection foundation for future feature updates.
Nevertheless, we also found several bypasses allowing us to misue Apple's satellite link. We built a satellite messenger allowing anyone with a jailbroken iPhone to send covert messages over satellite, bypassing Apple's restrictions and also potential censorship.
